Stone or Concrete?

Stone or Concrete? - Which surface to use for your project

What surface should you use for your project? At Green Garden Paving we are enthusiastic believers in the superiority of a good natural stone over concrete. Stone has been used as a paving surface for millennia, and it has stood the test of time. There are still ancient stone paving surfaces being used today in Egypt, Rome and even in the UK, several thousand years after they were first laid, and they look as good, or even better, now as when they were first installed. Concrete tends to weather quickly with surface pigments soon being lost and the grey aggregate soon showing through.

Stone is a premium surface, but is often cheaper than concrete. Green Garden Paving's sandstone flags cost less and last longer than an equivalent concrete product. Traditional stone flagstones were often more expensive to lay than concrete because of the differing thickness of each slab. This is no longer the case, as Green Garden Paving's slabs are all calibrated to the same thickness so the cost of laying our stone is much the same as laying concrete.

Benefits of Natural Stone Paving

How about wood?

Wood decking is also a popular finish for patios, and can look very good when set off against stone finishes. However, wood does have some limitations which should be taken into account:

  • It has a fairly short life span
  • It can become very slippery when wet or icy
  • It is more easily damaged
  • Make sure it is sourced from a sustainable managed forest
