There are two main methods for the laying sandstone and granite setts:
Carry out base preparation as per Preparation of Sub Base and Sub Grade. Sort the Setts into groups of similar widths. Prepare a 6:1 semi dry to slightly wet mix of concrete and individually lay each Sett into a concrete bed with a depth of 75-150mm. Each course of Setts can be chosen from the groups of similar widths. If the widths vary significantly then the Setts should be laid in a broken bond pattern. It is always best to lay Setts on rumble strips with a broken bond. Tap each Sett down into the concrete bed so the concrete bed encapsulates at least 12mm of the bottom edge of each Sett. Joint with GEO-fix jointing compound.
Carry out base preparation as per Preparation of Sub Base and Sub Grade. Fix edging pieces or strips into 100mm deep concrete bed. Lay a compacted 40-60mm dry sharp sand and cement bed to the appropriate falls. Lay Setts onto bed and compact (you may find the compaction works better if the joints are filled to within 25mm of the Sett surface with dry sharp sand and cement mix prior to compaction). Joint with GEO-fix jointing compound.
